Kolab Driving · Permi In design

From first lesson to permi, organised.

Kolab Driving runs the whole driving centre: learner files, instructor diaries, the dual-control fleet and the road to the test. Students see their progress, parents see the schedule, and the office stops living in an exercise book.

  • Lesson diary per instructor, per car, per student
  • Progress checklist from first start to test ready
  • Oral and practical test dates tracked with reminders
  • Lesson packs and payments in rupees, recorded properly

A driving centre is a scheduling business

Every driving centre juggles the same three diaries: students who can only come after work, instructors who cannot be in two places, and dual-control cars that need servicing, insurance and fitness like any fleet. Today that juggling lives in an exercise book by the phone, and every crossed-out line is a lesson that nearly went wrong.

Kolab Driving puts the three diaries in one place. Book a lesson and the student, the instructor and the car are reserved together; move it and everyone is told on WhatsApp. Each learner carries a file: permit dates, medical, lessons done, maneuvers mastered, money paid, and how close they are to test ready.

The test is the product. Progress tracking is built around it: a syllabus checklist from first start to hill start to parking, an honest test-ready flag the instructor controls, and the oral and practical dates tracked with reminders so nobody discovers a test date the night before.

In design, on familiar ground

Kolab Driving is a design-stage product looking for founding centres, assembled from patterns the family already runs.

  • Booking and diary patterns proven in our scheduling apps
  • The dual-control fleet reuses Kolab Transport: servicing, insurance and fitness alerts per car
  • Lesson reminders run on the recall engine proven in Kolab Healthcare
  • Payments and packs follow the receipt patterns used across the family

Modules

Everything inside Kolab Driving

Every module is a brick. Start with what hurts most, snap on the rest when you are ready.

Learner files

One file per student: permit dates, contacts, medical note, photos of paperwork, history.

Lesson diary

Instructor, car and student booked together. No double-booked Kango, no orphan slot.

Progress checklist

The syllabus as a checklist: moving off, hill start, parking, emergency stop, signed per lesson.

Test ready flag

An honest flag the instructor sets when a learner is truly ready, with the checklist as evidence.

Test bookings

Oral and practical dates per student, with countdown reminders to student and instructor.

Dual-control fleet

Each car's servicing, insurance and fitness dates, with alerts before anything lapses.

Packs & payments

Packs of 5 or 10 lessons, pay per lesson, cash or Juice, every rupee receipted.

WhatsApp reminders

Lesson tomorrow at 14:00, test Friday at 08:30, pack has 2 lessons left. Fewer no-shows.

No-show tracking

Missed lessons recorded fairly, with rebooking rules the centre decides.

Theory classes

Code de la route sessions with seats, attendance and materials in three languages.

Pass-rate analytics

First-time pass rates by instructor and by cohort, read with care, not as a whip.

Waiting list

When the diary is full, the list is honest: next free slot, first come, first served.

The diary

Three calendars, one booking

A lesson is a student, an instructor and a car at the same hour. Kolab Driving books all three in one move, shows each instructor their week, and cascades changes cleanly when rain, breakdowns or life intervene.

  • Instructor week view with student names and pickup points
  • A cancelled lesson frees the car and offers the slot to the waiting list
  • Rain-day reschedules message every affected student at once

Progress

Every learner knows where they stand

The syllabus lives as a checklist signed off lesson by lesson. Students see real progress instead of guessing, parents paying for packs see what the money bought, and the test-ready flag is earned, not sold.

  • Maneuvers ticked with a date and an instructor initial
  • Students see their own file on their phone
  • Test ready needs the checklist complete, no shortcuts

The tests

The oral, the practical, and no surprises

Test dates are the deadlines the whole centre runs toward. Kolab Driving tracks each student's oral and practical bookings, counts down with reminders on WhatsApp, and lines up a polish lesson in the final week.

  • Countdown reminders at 14, 7 and 1 days, to student and instructor
  • A final-week polish lesson suggested automatically
  • Results recorded, retries scheduled without drama

The money

Packs, payments and no awkward chalkboard

Lessons are paid one by one or in packs, in cash or on the phone, and the record must be clean for the centre and the family paying. Every payment gets a receipt, every pack shows its balance, and the reminder about the last two lessons is polite and automatic.

  • Packs of 5 or 10 with a live balance the student sees too
  • Receipts in rupees for every payment, exportable for the accountant
  • A pack ending prompts the rebooking conversation early

Local by design

Built for how the permi really happens

The learner permit, the oral, the scarce test slots and the family paying in cash: Permi is designed around the road every Mauritian driver has travelled.

The paperwork path

Learner permit dates, medical and eye test notes, and the documents that must be in the car, tracked per student from day one.

Scarce test slots

Test dates are precious. The centre sees every booked slot, and a withdrawal frees it for the next ready student instead of wasting it.

Rain and cyclone days

A washed-out afternoon reschedules in one move: students messaged, instructor weeks rebuilt, no exercise-book chaos.

Three languages

Reminders and theory materials in English, French and Kreol Morisien, because the code is hard enough in one language.

Cash and Juice

Lessons are paid in cash and mobile money here. Both are first-class, both leave a clean receipt.

DPA 2017

Learner files hold IDs and medical notes. Role-based access, retention rules and exports are built in, not bolted on.

Boost in Kolab Driving

Boost celebrates readiness and reliability, never pushing an unready learner toward a test date.

Learner streaks

Lessons attended on time build a streak students enjoy keeping. No-shows quietly break it.

Skill milestones

First hill start, first night drive, checklist complete: milestones earn badges worth a family boast.

Instructor recognition

Instructors earn recognition for checklist honesty and student readiness, never for rushing students to test.

Questions

Asked all the time

What exists today?
Kolab Driving is in design. The patterns it assembles are proven elsewhere in the family: booking diaries, fleet alerts from Kolab Transport, and the reminder engine from Kolab Healthcare. We are looking for founding centres to shape the syllabus checklist with us.
Does it book the official tests for us?
No. Test slots are booked with the authorities as today; Kolab Driving tracks the dates, counts down, reminds everyone and makes sure a freed slot goes to the next ready student.
Can students really see their own file?
Yes, their own and only their own: progress checklist, next lessons, pack balance and test dates, on their phone. Parents paying can be given the same view for a minor.
What about motorcycle and heavy vehicle training?
Same bones, different syllabus checklists. Checklists are editable per licence category, so a moto school ticks different boxes than a lorry school.
How do payments work with mostly cash?
Cash stays cash: the office records it in two taps and the student gets a WhatsApp receipt. Juice and bank transfer are recorded the same way. The accountant gets one clean export.
Why per instructor and not per student?
Because instructors are the capacity and students should never be rationed. Unlimited learner files at every tier; you pay for the diary seats that earn.
