The copybook, the cash box and the gate, replaced kindly

Education in Mauritius runs far beyond the school bell: tuition centres in every town, pre-primaries, music schools, training rooms. Most of it runs on copybooks, cash and a teacher's memory, and mostly that works, until a parent asks exactly who collected their child, or which of the instalments were actually paid.

Kolab Education keeps the register properly. Students with guardians and emergency contacts. Attendance marked in seconds, with a WhatsApp to the parent the moment their child arrives. A pickup log at the gate that knows who is authorised. Fees in rupee instalments with receipts, and the 16:00 Grade 9 maths batch with its capacity, its register and its waiting list.

It is in build, and its heart already exists: our school-attendance brick, with the parent pickup log, is built and working. The build wraps fees, batches, timetables and reports around it, with founding schools and tuition centres shaping what ships first.

Starting from a working attendance brick

Kolab Education is in build, but the part parents care most about already exists and works: attendance with a parent pickup log.

  • School attendance brick: class registers and a parent pickup log, built
  • Fees, receipts and reminders on the same rupee documents as the rest of the family
  • Batch and timetable patterns from our booking and register bricks
  • Teacher hours link to Kolab HR for part-time tutor payroll

The gate

The first question parents ask is safety

Every child has an authorised collector list, with photos. At the gate, each collection is logged against it: who came, at what time, for which child. An unlisted collector triggers a phone call, not a guess.

  • Authorised collectors per child, with photos
  • Every collection logged with person and time
  • An unlisted collector triggers a call, never a guess

Batches

The 16:00 batch, full, with a fair queue

Tuition runs in batches, and Lekol treats them as first-class: capacity, a register per session, fees attached, and a waiting list that messages the next family the moment a seat opens. Teacher hours per batch flow to payroll through Kolab HR.

  • Capacity per batch, a register per session
  • Waiting lists message the next family when a seat opens

Local by design

Made for how Mauritius learns

Private tuition is enormous here, and it runs on copybooks and cash. Lekol keeps the warmth and adds the record.

Tuition first

Batches, per-batch fees, waiting lists and tutor hours: the tuition centre is a first-class citizen, not an afterthought.

Safety, answered

The pickup log answers a parent's first question with a record, not a memory: who is authorised, who collected, at what time.

Trilingual parents

Messages go out in English, French or Kreol Morisien per family, so every parent reads comfortably.

Cyclone closures

When schools close on a warning, every parent gets the message at once, and the day is recorded correctly in the register.

Cash, recorded

Fees still arrive in cash here. Receipts print or WhatsApp instantly, and the drawer reconciles at closing time.

Children's data, DPA 2017

Records about children get the strictest handling: role-based access, retention rules, and exports for parents on request.

Boost at school

Gentle recognition for the staffroom, and for classes where the school chooses to use it.

Register streaks

Teachers who mark every register on time build streaks the head can see and thank.

Batch stars

Batches with steady attendance earn class badges, celebrated on the noticeboard.

Staffroom kudos

Peer kudos between teachers turn into points, and points into small rupee-budgeted rewards.

Questions

Asked all the time

Is our students' data safe?
Records about children get the strictest handling under Mauritius DPA 2017: role-based access enforced server-side, contact details masked by default, honest retention rules, and exports for parents on request.
Do parents need to install an app?
No. Arrival notices, receipts and reminders arrive on WhatsApp, with SMS as a fallback for families who prefer it. Parents just read their phone.
Can it run a tuition centre that takes cash?
It is designed for exactly that. Cash is receipted on the spot, the drawer reconciles at closing, instalments are tracked per family, and arrears reminders go out politely on WhatsApp.
Does it handle official returns and inspections?
Registers, attendance and fee records export in open formats, so whatever return or audit you face, the evidence is a download, not a weekend of copying from copybooks.
When does it launch?
Kolab Education is in build. The attendance and parent pickup brick is built and working; fees, batches and reports are being wrapped around it. Founding schools on the waitlist shape that order and lock the launch price for two years.
Can parents pay online?
Bank transfer, Juice and my.t money references are recorded against the right family, with receipts either way. Card payments are on the roadmap, not a promise for launch day.
